The photographer manipulated the source of light through lenses, shutters and irises in order to selectively activate certain silver halide crystals didn't he? In the case of digital photography we simply extend this process to include programmed algorithms to contribute to the process. Photographers have been using algorithms for years to come up with results - its called thinking. Another way of putting it - Let's go back to cave dwellers. Caveman Ralph has just discovered that attaching animal hair to the end of a stick allows him to alter the thickness of the pigment he is using to represent a bison. However, he is stoned by his fellows for moving beyond the mundane mono thickness produced by a plain stick dipped in pigment.
