Ya, my hat goes off to you.
I'm in IT, and we generally make our money off implementing
transactional based websites (banks, insurance etc) and I've never had
to design or write a system from scratch. I don't know too many people
who do. There's a WHACK of work there. We start of with software that
helps generates a website for you. There are lots of them out there.
You can take blogging software like wordpress etc and turn it into
something that is pretty close to a full blown website. There's also CMS
based websites like Plone etc that do the trick if the blogging software
route doesn't work for you.

http://www.knotzke.ca I just slapped in Wordpress, found a simple
template and voila.
But writing it all from scratch? Phew! That's impressive.
