Larry, I received a Dell Inspiron 1100 with 256 mb of ram like yours. I 
formatted the drive and reinstalled XP SP2 as it took about 5 minutes to 
be ready.

I had defragged the drive, run memory tests, done chkdsk, run vir*s 
scans and nothing helped much. After the format it was much quicker, as 
it had been almost 5 years since originally installed by Dell. But of 
course another 512mb of ram would be really helpful too :)
