It will give you a guide to most of the distributions of Linux that can be run from a "Live" CD, which is what you are referring to. I recommend you give Ubuntu Live a shot, it is very easy to use if you are just starting out with Linux. Ubuntu is based on the Debian distribution and it has an excellent software packaging system.
