Try reading this article:
http://www.osnews.com/story.php/9569/Linux-LiveCD-Roundup/. It will give you
a guide to most of the distributions of Linux that can be run from a "Live"
CD, which is what you are referring to. I recommend you give Ubuntu Live a
shot, it is very easy to use if you are just starting out with Linux. Ubuntu
is based on the Debian distribution and it has an excellent software
packaging system. Good luck with it!.
