as my girth shrinks i drift into fantasy
having passed a week on what i call the puritan diet--
if it is likely to give you pleasure, don't eat or drink it--
i have what i may be glimpses
or pangs

the lightest of all the burdens past versifiers carried
while living oh so backwardly and skint
pacing what one imagines to have been
opulent ante rooms of grace and favor
was a species of flea
pulex poetry

its natural role was to bite and found in the epidermis of the scribbler
an inflammatory monument on which national and regional makeup
could propound either exponentially or homeopathically bloody great myths
which were most easily perceived following death

thus when dunning rain pounded and hissed
or crying weans shivered
run of the mill folk like you and i missed
were diverted from
the power of these itches
to conjure like witches
hello-my-name-is packaged tours
with full en suite and late-opening bars
which honor with lectures and all round pusturing
many of the exquisite miseries which go in
to make up verse
