I keep having to go to the pound/dollar converter. According to that, 1600
pounds is $2,000 and some odd -- that can't be right?

Rents hereabouts are say £1600/1700 per month for a small "4" (i.e. 3)
bedroomed house in a side street; that's partly because of the student market
in
Cardiff, Roath borders on the university quarter.

But the mortgage payment for a house like that could be a lot less

Egads -- I have a three-bedroom, 1 and a half bath, kitchen, laundry room,
dining room, family room and "front" room (we use it as a music room) and my
mortgage pmt. is roughly $700/mo (of course that will be increasing sharply w/
the coming interest rates!).
