I figured it was something like this. And of course it's always been possible to follow page loading by reading the status line. I just find it interesting to follow the progress bar that Jaws seems to have created for these situations (or are they something sighted people see as they Web surf?). But there seldom seems to be much correlation between what the progress announcement says and what's happening on the screen, which I can see although I can't make out details. On some web site, such as the sites of online newspapers like the L.A. Times and New york Times, the progress bar will announce 100 per cent while, in fact, the page isn't fully loaded according to the status line, and nothing but the global navigation links are on the page yet, while I keep trying to use Find to get to the days date at the head of the list of headlines on a section index page and coming up empty, because the editorial material isn't actually on the screen yet. I try to bear with all this with a sense of humor, except where the Los Angeles times online (www.latimes.com) is concerned, because I have had muchos problemas with that site (no, that's not a grammar error, non-Spanish speakers; "problema" is a masculine noun, despite its ending). But I'm about to enter into a round of discussion with a new contact at the L.A. Times to see if I can instill some conscience into these people. But I digress. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Francis Daniels" <fdaniels@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, March 27, 2005 10:58 AM Subject: Re: jaws 6 .0 best feature bad implementation Hi Daniel, The progress announcement follows how the download of the page progresses. Depending on Internet traffic, it might start slowly because of a graphic and then speed up when the traffic allows it. JAWS is just following this. When we didn't have it, I would monitor the page download by Insert Page Down. When I heard "Done Internet," I knew the page was fully loaded. Personally, I like the progress announcement, but I know that if I don't want it, I can turn it off.
