no you can just render the Logo with the solid background color that you have chosen. Since there is no gradient or anything like that in the background, this should be no problem at all. IE has only problems with transparency in PNGs, not with solid PNGs. So no color loss.

Yea, but what if we want to change the colors of the header? Then we would have to change the logo as well.
There's also some other PNGs round the site which also need this fix.
