Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton County May 22, 2007 Least Bittern Nests: #1, May 9, 3 eggs, May 12 eggs gone, apparent predator #2, May 9, 4 eggs, May 12 eggs gone, apparent predator #3, May 22, 3 eggs, male came to nest #4, May 22, 0 eggs, bowl good, very little canopy, cattails still too short #5, May 22, 0 eggs, new, unfinished, cattails neither high nor dense #6, May 22, 2 eggs, highest nest I have yet seen, bowl 40" above water Along the east side, near the black plastic fence, flushed a Least Bittern that appeared immature, lots of down, but able to fly. It seems to early for that? Weasel, first I have seen at the marsh, likely Least Bittern predator, especially for nests that can be reached without swimming.
