Recovering the backup won't help if the problem was there at the time as 
well. If not, then go ahead. Heck, won't hurt.

Another thing (they just keep popping into my head)... you can try removing 
the modem drivers, shutting down, removing the modem physically, restart 
the computer with no modem, then shut down, reinstall the modem but on a 
different PCI slot, then restart the computer and reinstall the drivers. By 
doing this, maybe you'll reset something that got messed up. By switching 
PCI slots, might help your computer NOT reinstalling or reverting back to 
the same corrupted files.
