Cole's gave me a price of around 600 dollars for the #9 plus more for the
governor. I did not want to make another one, but I had an old friend who
wanted to build an engine with fly ball governor on it. When I got that
price via telephone, my friend was chagrined to say the least and gave up on
it. Because of that, I decided to design a Rocking Valve Mill Engine for
him to build as it had a governor and required no castings. As I built my
copy, I photographed it for an article in Live Steam magazine where it was
published in the Mar-April 2002 issue. My friend built his copy and had it
running shortly before he died of prostate cancer. We had chased steam
engines all over the South for 30 years or more. I really hated to see him
leave us, a better friend I never had.
