Mike, thanks for attempting to correct my simplistic view of history.

However, the Jews really have lived in Israel for 3000 plus years. Not all
of them, but some of them. Some lived in the land and others lived in the
Diaspora. These are the Jews that lived throughout the world. Many of them
have returned to Israel. Others remain elsewhere. I don't recall whether
Israel or New York today has the largest Jewish population in the world.
Some Jews prefer to remain in the Diaspora.

The Jews fought the Canaanites for the land after the Exodus. The Amorites,
Hittites were long gone before the Wilderness journey. I don't know that
the Hurians were ever in the Land.

Yes the Assyrians conquered the land and took the Northern tribes into
captivity. Many later returned but the tribes didn't reinstate themselves.
The Southern tribes, Judah and Benjamin were taking into captivity by the
Babylonians for a Diaspora of 70 years, but they returned and pretty much
became Judah from then on although many traced their ancestry to other
tribes. The Persians helped them return after the Babylonian captivity.
The Romans conquered the area but didn't drive them out although they did
drive them out of Jerusalem when it was destroyed in 70 AD.

Other nations conquered the area but Jews remained. Mohammad's Arabs
conquered them in the 7th century and the land has been dominated by Muslims
ever since, but Jews remained in the land.

After WWI the Jews began importuning the British to allow them to official
live in the land they always lived in and once again have an "official
homeland." The British agreed, and when they left in 1948 the Jews
remained, and then had to fight for what the British allowed them. But Arab
attempts to drive them out failed and the Jews remained.

Lawrence claims that the Jews have been in Israel for 3000 years. I don't
think so. For the past 2000 they've been scattered over the face of the
earth. The land of Israel-Palestine has been either the home of or governed

by the Canaanites, the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Hurians,
the Hebrews, the Philistines (from whom the name Palestine comes), the
Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, the Ptolemies of
Egypt, the Seleucids of Syria, the Romans, Muslim Arabs (CE 638), the
Abbasids in Baghdad, (750), followed by the Seljuks, Fatimids, and European
Crusaders, the Ottoman Turks (1517) -- then it really starts to get
complicated. Just thought Lawrence should know that the world is not as
simple as he thinks it.

And do you grant that claim to the American Indians?

That's the most empty, pathetic thing I've ever read. I support the State
of Israel because nobody'll give the Jews a break. They NEED a homeland
even though the idea of a religious state appalls me.
