Rebecca > Rebecca ... I'm not sure of the error messages you refer too. Obviously, I have been out of the loop for awhile and the error messages were missed by me. However, from the little bit of info above, it sounds to me as if you have your security settings for your browser set too high. Some people advocate using the highest security settings available, but it does limit your being able to see many web sites. You probably use some version of IE for your browser and I use Netscape so I'm not that well versed in the operation of IE. I do know that you can check and set these options by clicking on Tools/internet options/security in IE. The levels of protection limit what can and cannot be loaded as indicated beside each zone if you click on each of the icons at the top of the page. If you click on the slider bar on the left and move it up or down, it will tell you on the right side what the selected level will or won't allow you to do with your browser. As to the Task bar icon's disappearing, I have no idea why that is happening, but it certainly would be difficult negotiating your way around without them. I doubt that installing and running the AVG (or any other) antivirus will make your icons reappear, but if it does find and repair infected files, who knows what it may help.
