Villy,

You're reply made me smile. Thanks. I needed that. I will say that not
everywhere is as it is where you live. In Antigua, outlets may be either
110 or 220. Worse, in that country, the outlets (at least the houses I
have seen) are all like the standard 110 outlet with two parallel slots.
People had labels on them, either 110 or 220. Would be all too easy for
a person to plug in an appliance intended for 110 into a 220 outlet.

As for NTSC vs. PAL, please remember that we had television before
Europe. They took our design and improved on it, by adding more scan
lines. The Americans were already tied to NTSC. HDTV will certainly
beat PAL, but it will cost our citizens and TV stations and related
businesses countless dollars. A lot of people, myself included, are very
upset over that. Why, you might ask? It will make at least 500 million
video devices obsolete.

Fifty years ago (or so), FM stereo was introduced in the U.S. The FCC
wisely ruled that the broadcast signal must be such that those with mono
receivers could still hear the complete signal and not be forced to buy
new equipment. FM exploded all over the country.

Trivia question (for those of us over 50). How could you tell a car in
the late 50's or early 60's had an FM radio installed? Answer--the
antenna was mounted at a 45-degree angle. AM uses a vertically polorized
signal, early FM used same as TV, a horizontally polorized signal. Now,
almost all FM broadcasts a dual polorized signal.

Merry Christmas,
