Richard, that IS the key word. You are
discussing the "perfect print" while I am
discussing the usable print. One of my best
pictures was shot three stops underexposed not by
choice but by need -- and the subject is
wonderfully highlighted with washed-out
backgrounds behind her. Worked great. I have
had much less joy with over-exposed negatives.
Ilford and ORWO and Kodak and Gevaert recognized
this and told you how to correct processing to do
the best with the image you had to use.
Science matters less here than making a print which satisfies.
