BIOS updates are necessary most often to support new technology.  Otherwise, 
unless a defect is found in the BIOS, you are correct that a flash is not 
necessary.  I am curious as to why the recommnedation was made also.  A 
computer as new as a Dimension 8300 with a 2.6GHz P-4 should not need a BIOS 
flash.
