CableCARD does nothing for scrambled/protected analog transmissions. Analog scrambling, to the extent it still exists, is rare. It does allow you to view QAM conditionally-accessed programming (including call-ahead PPV, if supported by the operator), but does not (currently) help with access to "switched digital" channels (without the use of a not-yet-available "tuning resolver" and a receiver (TiVo) that supports it). -----Original Message----- From: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Craig Birkmaier Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2008 10:18 AM To: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [opendtv] Re: Content picture fuzzy for latest HDTVs At 7:54 AM -0800 1/15/08, John Willkie wrote: >Doesn't cable card ONLY work on QAM tuners? It looks like most sets are shipping with QAM/ATSC tuners, but only a handful of channels can be accessed without the cable card - typically the same broadcast stations you can access with an antenna - rendering these tuners mostly worthless. Meanwhile the DBS and cable operators are starting a "real" HD war based on services that are built around an HD PVR box and on demand services...
