Dennis Arendt reports:
The Eugene Wednesday birders went to the McKenzie River Trust property
at Green Island this morning. Many of the nest boxes were being used -
mostly by Tree Swallows, though we did find a pair of Western Bluebirds
using a nest box which was deliberately placed very close to another
nest box. The swallows will not use nest boxes so close together;
therefore one of the nest boxes is available for another species, like
the bluebirds. A House Wren was also singing near the area and may be
using one of the similar nest boxes. Lazuli Buntings were in the area,
as well as Bullock's Orioles. There were no Meadowlarks reported by the
group, though the area has very suitable meadowlark habitat. The river
changed course over the winter, cutting a steep bank at our feet. Two
pairs of Rough-winged Swallows had burrowed very good nesting cavities
into this bank. The entire list follows.
