I've seen this behavior when the files are stored on a network drive and it
has something to do with the network permissions. Are these files being
saved on a network drive or locally on her hard drive?

Subject: [mso] Office XP and mysteriously read-only files

Hi folks,
Does anyone know if the following behavior is a known bug in Office XP
and/or whether there is some kind of fix:

User opens an Office XP document and upon trying to save changes made, a
little box comes up saying the document is read-only or another user is
currently using it. User verifies that the document is NOT open by
another user. User also verifies file attributes on the document and
read-only is not checked. Only way around this is to "Save As" and give
the document a slightly different name. The next day the original
document behaves normally again. No changes to the system between the
two days.

I've had behavior like this both at our office and at one of our clients
(we are a small IT consulting firm).

Thanks!
Elise
