Yes, this is because at some point the user crashed their computer and a working version of the document's temp files got locked into the system. Now when they try to open the file, Word still assumes the doc is in use and won't allow the file to be resaved. To fix the problem, search the user HD for ~*.*...and BE SURE to include the tilde before the search criteria...or ALL the computer files will be deleted! By closing all apps first and then searching for ~*.*, you'll locate all TEMP files that have been lost over time for various crash reasons in all programs. Delete them. A reboot is also usually a good idea after a large clearing of these files. That should solve the problem. If not, then you are using an antivirus software program and the file you're trying to access is on a network drive and the user doesn't have proper permissions to overwrite the file due to the settings in the antivirus software. User verifies that the document is NOT open by another user. User also verifies file attributes on the document and read-only is not checked. Only way around this is to "Save As" and give the document a slightly different name. The next day the original document behaves normally again. No changes to the system between the two days. I've had behavior like this both at our office and at one of our clients (we are a small IT consulting firm). Thanks!
