[mso] Re: Office XP and mysteriously read-only files

Another very common problem is not enough space on the network drive,
especially considering the tmp files word creates while the document is
open, and if word does auto-saves and or the user does a save while the
doc is open another .tmp file is created if any changes were made. these
.tmp files stay on the drive until the document is closed, If the user
or word's auto-save save the file 10 times, 10 times the space of the
original file could be used on the drive until the document is closed.
I've seen this happen many times, especially lately, the fantastic part
is if the network drive runs out of space, the file gets trashed, word
blows up, and you might as well go home for the day while the IT
department does a restore from lastnights backups and all your work for
the day is gone. One of the dangers of using network file servers with word.

Of course now if the user copies the file to the local drive, then
others can access/change the network copy in the mean time and when the
user copies the file back to the network drive all their changes will be
lost. My preference is to copy the file to the local drive, rename the
file on the network drive to show who has it, do my changes, copy te
file back and delete the renamed copy, this way others will know the
file is being updated and hopefully they will be smart enough not to
change it.
