BINGO!!! That's the antivirus software. They keep files on the drive
with a weird extension like .nai or something like that. Sorry I'm brain
dead and can't come up with the details right now. But find the
extension of those files...delete them and you'll have access
again...and then set the antivirus so it won't lock files out like
this...I've seen this one a ton of times!

Actually I didn't.  What permissions settings could be in AV software?
Our client is running Computer Associates eTrust InoculateIT 6.0 for
Small Business Server 2000.  I don't remember any permissions settings
in the software.  The MS article that Phil posted also referred to AV
software possibly interfering with the save function in Excel.
