Two different understandings of piled books:
in one, innocents slide sideways on top of verticals,
with a kind of mosh pit vibe,
surfing their way to my attention.
Too noisy.
In the other tranquility abounds,
cairns and gardens come to mind,
small stands dotting the floor,
waiting for time and sun to arrive.
I am the gardener of my study; I am a listener in the glom.

One aid to teaching is having a fund of examples, a storehouse to raid when say
you're explaining how hard a problem motive is in history. This week I added to
that fund when a friend said he thought he might stop renting, buy a house
because his tor-
toise needed a garden
in which to run.
