[lit-ideas] math question

Okay, so I don't know if this link will come through ok or not. The
graphic fascinates me because I don't understand if it's just a cute little
trick of base 10, if it's a symptom of how humans talk about numbers, or
reflects some mathematical principal. In other words, my question
is...."why"? To which perhaps the answer is simply "why not?".
Any math types out there care to essay an answer?
