Right, in my followup email I boiled it down to a simpler question:  Does a
plugin have to specifically support an encoding, or does a plugin only
support the channel-counts?  That is, if I connect an LtRt stream to a
stereo reverb, does it just connect, or does it complain?

LtRt is just an example - I don't think we can make ANY assumptions about
any consistencies across encodings.
