3) Chris' (and maybe others' too) idea a) Load LtRt 2-channel stream as-is b) Process these 2 channels with LtRt-specific plug-ins - an LtRt plug-in will know enough not to do anything to the signal that would invalidate the LtRt encoding c) Output LtRt - because you have not done invalid things, your encoding is guaranteed to be valid as an LtRt stream

Which is a fine model, IMHO. It requires the plugin to explicitly support the format...

yes

...which means that LtRt != Stereo. A stereo attentuator, for
example, would not be able to handle an LtRt Stream, unless the user forced
it (if the host allows that at all - tag it as Stereo, tag it back afterwards).

Not necessarily. You assume that connecting LtRt to stereo would be prohibited, which I would not recommend. If there were just a warning, I'd be more than happy.

Note that this goes contrary to some opinions expressed in earlier
discussion of encodings ;) Those opinions were that connecting LtRt to
Stereo is just fine. You are now espousing MY position :)

Again, I am not against that. It just didn't show up in my case 3). And I'm just repeating what I've been saying all along, not changing position.
