atw: Re: To press while... or hold?

"Pressing the Shift key while clicking the button updates all
parameters." That's 11 words, and on the width my dialog box is set to,
the word 'parameters' wraps to the next line.

"Press the Shift key and click the button to update all parameters."
That's 12 words, but 'parameters' does not wrap in this sentence.

So I suppose it depends on how you define 'longer'!

If physical length is an issue, the rewrite is fine. If physical length
is not an issue, and the following is OK in the context of the
surrounding text, you could also try:
"If you want to update all parameters, press the Shift key and click the
button."

Or maybe the shorter version:
"To update all parameters, press the Shift key and click the button."

Naomi says: I'd take that to mean 'press SHIFT, then click'. If that was
what the sentence meant, then that would be how you would write it. But
that's not what the sentence means, so it's OK as is, by me anyway :-)

Sonja

Valid suggestion, Sonja - thanks.

Doing so, however, makes the sentence longer.

"Press the Shift key and click the button to update all parameters".

Your thoughts?

I've always used press. Does someone have a Microsoft Manual of Style
handy? I think that's what they prescribe.

If that were my sentence and the context allowed for it, I'd actually
rewrite the sentence to remove the 'ings'.

Hi

Any suggestions for a sub to "pressing" in the below statement?

"Pressing the Shift key while clicking the button updates all
parameters"

My colleagues use "hold".

Thanks & Regards
Nigel
