Yesterday I checked the lake from Kohler SP north to Point Beach SF before
moving over to the Green Bay area. Kohler had lots of Red-br. Mergansers
moving around, some what unusual for this time of the year. I found out why at
the next stop, which was at a deadened road where Evergreen Rd turns south.
There was lots of ice on the lake, in many places north through Sheboygan,
Manitowoc, Two Rivers and Point Beach SF, so the birds and gulls were primarily
concentrated where there was a little open water. At the aforementioned
deadend road were the usual diving ducks, gulls on the lake, plus in one group
out a ways were all three scoters---4-6 White-winged, 2-4 Surf and 1 Black.
They were actively feeding causing difficulty in getting exact numbers.
Only 2 Great Black-backed and 1 Glaucous Gull were tallied between Sheboygan
and Manitowoc. Two Long-tailed Ducks were seen off Pt. Beach SP, and only
because the only open water was way out and they happened to fly and land.
East of Green Bay, I checked the Willow Rd/QQ junction and was rewarded with 20
Lapland Longspurs that flew up and relanded in the field. The mouth of the Fox
River had limited open water with 7 cormorants, a pair of Ring-necked Ducks, a
Redhead and both species of scaup being the notable species. The Peregrine
Falcon was perched on top of a light on the power plant.
A check of the Freedom area yielded no Snowy Owl both there were a few small
flocks of Horned Larks with several Lapland Longspurs in one of the flocks.
With lots of sun and warmer temps it was a fun day to be birding.
