A very large group of American white pelicans was observed on a mud bar off
Hiwassee Island in the Tennessee River around 11 AM this morning. I was at the
Cherokee Removal Memorial Park overlook in Meigs County at Birchwood. Most of
the birds were sleeping close together at a distance of over one mile, so it
was not possible to get an accurate count. I would estimate that there were a
few hundred pelicans altogether.
