The water levels in the Tennessee and Hiwassee rivers in Meigs County at
Birchwood remain very high, however the water level in the slough at the
Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge viewing area has dropped a small amount. The change by
this afternoon was enough to allow sandhill cranes a few areas where they could
stand in shallow water safely. With colder temperature in the north central
states, this might produce an influx of cranes and better viewing opportunities
in the days ahead.
