I went to Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge (Meigs County) at Birchwood at mid-day today, primarily to pick up the TOS Visitors List. I was there during what is usually a very poor time to see very many birds - from 12:05 to 1:05 PM. I was surprised to identify 18 species during that time, all from the gazebo at HWR. They were: * 1 blue grosbeak * 1 American goldfinch seen and others heard * Several bluebirds * 2 red-winged blackbirds seen and others heard * 1 red-tailed hawk * 2 Carolina wrens * 3 wood ducks * 1 bobwhite quail heard * American crows heard * 2 or more turkey vultures * 1 great blue heron * 1 immature bald eagle * 1 house finch * 1 northern cardinal * 1 osprey * 1 eastern kingbird Charles Murray Birchwood, TN
