[texbirds] Tuesday morning bird census, Hagerman NWR.

On a very warm and windy day we finished our census with 90 species, unusually 
good for January or any other month for that matter. There were still about 
3500 white geese present.  But there is hardly anything to eat on the refuge 
now, so they are venturing off the refuge to nearby farm fields.  They come 
back to the refuge in the afternoon to drink, bathe and rest.  We located a 
pair of Greater Scaups on the pond near Hagerman Cemetery.  We saw a couple of 
Cackling Geese just north of headquarters.  There was a lone female Hooded 
Merganser on Dead Woman Pond.  We located a Pileated and 4 Red-headed 
Woodpeckers on the west side of the refuge. A least one American Bittern is 
still present in Taylor Marsh. We saw 6 Inca Doves at the corner by the houses 
on the way to Goode. We found 12 sparrow species. We also got good closeup 
looks at a House Wren on the cut thru from "C" pad to to the west side of the 
refuge. We saw a flock of  42 Redheads and also observed 2 mature Bald Eagles 
on "E" pad. The warm weather and abundance of birds made for a great day.
