Well, yes. You see, any object that would be from middle distance and beyond falls easily into the category of easy-to-determine, focus-wise; so the only reason to use the ground glass would be in close-focus situations. Just take a look at the distance markings on your 38mm. They go "into the red" below twelve inches or 30cm. That's where the groundglass is good to have.
