Sooo, where do I get an affordable 4/40 FLE for my SL66 or 6008AF? Lots of wishes for the next Christmases. Uwe 2012/9/27 CarlosMFreaza <cmfreaza@xxxxxxxxx> 2012/9/27 Uwe Wolfgang Steinke <paintingwithlenses@xxxxxxxxx>: > Hi all, > > does anyone know, why this lens (Carl Zeiss Rolleiflex SL66 1:4/40 mm > Distagon FLE HFT) ebay No. 370656370748 has a focusring? The SL66 has it's > own focus-knob... As we commented two days ago talking about Rolleiwide, FW and Carl Zeiss CF/CFI 4/50mm FLE lens, Floating Lens Elements help to improve the general lens performance for the close focusing range (for WA lenses specially); some MF lenses like the mentioned Distagon 4/50 FLE or the Distagon 4/40 FLE (Hasselblad, SL66 HFT and 6xxx HFT PQ versions) have a secondary focusing ring to set the FLE focusing distance manually according the main lens focusing setting distance, the main focusing knob for the SL66 is in the camera body and then only the FLE secondary focusing ring is in the lens barrel. F.E. Carl Zeiss says about the 4/40 FLE lens: "... IN SPITE of the wide aperture, wide angle of view and long focal length of this lens, distortion has been kept at a remarkably low level - making this lens suitable even for critical architectural photography. The floating lens element (FLE) design enhances image quality at close range. The two floating front elements are moved by means of a secondary focusing ring with three click stops: infinity - 2m, 2m - 0.9m and 0.9m - 0.5m.. This lens is ideal for interior or architectural photography. Its broad angle of view are especially good for these kind of application. Though, have to be careful on its slight exaggerated perspective. The floating elements design opens up more photographic oppurtunities in close up photography without the compromised decrease in image quality." Aspherical and Floating lens elements made possible that zoom lenses replaced prime lenses as standard for digial and 35mm film cameras, floating elements automatically work in these lenses as John wrote. Some prime lenses like the Nikon AF DC-NIKKOR 135mm f/2 D has a secondary ring for floating elements to control the background softness for portraits and similar shots.
