Troth the refill kits work well but it depends on how
the print head is constructed. I believe Cris said she
heard you can fry your printer with the kits - which
is true in a way. If your printer has the print heads
built into the cartridge (most HP printers do) then
all you fry is the cartridge (usually by being too
aggressive with the syringe) but if your printer has a
fixed print head (like some epsons) and you refill the
cartridge in such a way that it leaks you fry the
whole printer. And that is another reason to buy
printer specific refills because on HP injets (and
others) you are essentially replacing the part of the
printer that is most prone to wear (the print head
which even on the wonderfull dot matrix does wear
out). "Refurbished" refill cartridges are pretty much
like used cars in that sense.

Don mentioned that you can often buy a printer for
less than the refill cartridge. Don I have done this
myself and yes it works - it also helps to have a
backup printer because they do fail and when they do
it is when you most need it (the resume - the report -
the (well we have all been there).
