The ink cartridges are so expensive because the printers are so cheap.... 
many sell at wholesale and retail for less than it cost the manufacturer to 
build them.

Once you buy your first set of replacement cartridges the printer is paid 
for and the rest is pure gravy.

That is why the advice I have read has always said that once your printer 
warranty runs out, use whatever ink cartridge or refill kit your needs 
require and your budget allows.
