I have worked on many of these. The #1 problem here is almost always not
first lubrication but DIRT. Carefully disassemble the mechanism and
thoroughly degrease it with naptha (lighter fluid). This is a dirty,
nasty process so I recommend you work over some kind of disposable
surface like cardboard and in a well ventilated area. I also
recommend you wear nitrile gloves and protective eyeware and some
kind of shop apron to protect your clothes.
Be sure to clean the rails, the guides they run in, the rotating gear
(you do not have to remove it to do this), and the rack that gear
runs on. The best way to do this is to soak lint free cloth in
naptha and work it along the surfaces.
When reassembling, use a VERY light coating of quality machine oil
on the guides/rails, and an even lighter coating of white lithium
grease on the drive track/gear (rack and pinion). You do not need
a lot here.
Be super careful about not getting naptha or grease anywhere else on
the camera, lens, belows etc. I usually remove lens and back before
doing any of this.
BEWARE: Doing this is messy and highly flammable. I strongly recommend
taking your working surface, naptha and grease/oil soaked rag fragments and
making sure
they are completely dry before tossing into the garbage. Oil/naptha
soaked rags have been known to catch on fire after disposal. Personally,
I stuff them into an old coffee can and fill with with water and then put
the cover back on.
