This may be true for new high power FM stations, but there is plenty

Don't forget that we are talking about translators with coverage that is
allowed to exceed 40 miles of radius. That is what started this thread, and
what you seemed to miss then, and now. Such FM stations are right up there with
the norm, not by any means lower powered.
There is good reason to believe that most of the interference and
quality issues are related to the characteristics of this spectrum,
which do not change with a digital approach.
Hardly. First off, I already explained that these MW digital stations would
never exceed their 10 kHz channel width (+/- 5 kHz), when operating only
digital. They would not be allowed to go out to +/- 15 kHz, as AM is allowed to
do now in daytime hours. So this avoids some adjacent station interference
right there, at least in daytime, so it would allow more stations in the MW
band that can exist today.
Secondly, the powerline noise and other static noise that plagues AM would not
be a factor, very much as it is not a factor in FM either. Analog AM is happy
to demodulate any and all noise. That's one reason why FM was developed to
begin with. Digital is even more helpful.
Thirdly, you would not experience the nighttime problems with audible
intermodulation squeals.
Fourth, the audio quality is hugely improved, with digital data compression
techniques, compared with AM. And this last point is the most relevant, to
address what the FCC claims is the main problem with AM.
Like I said, going digital would make the MW band useful again.
Sure they would possible Bert. But who would listen to them. On the
other hand, there are tens of millions of analog AM receivers out there.
Receivers that no one listens to. And worse, with the FCC idea of "AM
revitalization," even FEWER people would listen to.
Here's the bottom line. Why doesn't the FCC say it like it is, assuming they
agree with your ideas? The FCC *could* say, we think that no one really wants
to build any new radio stations. We think that AM sucks, so we'll let AM
stations migrate to FM. We think the MW band can be allowed to lay fallow,
because radio is passé. Instead, they wax eloquent about the wonderfulness of
radio, and then proceed to give MW the death blow, resulting in even less room
available for new stations.
I wouldn't necessarily disagree that radio is passé, but I feel no compulsion
to mask these sentiments with sound-good banalities. Or perhaps, the above is
not the case, and the MW band can truly be "revitalized."
