NO. And why do you call this clutter?
You are adding stations to one spectrum slice that have been using a different
slice. This means, clutter and waste, hardly "reuse." You could instead allow
for more stations, in that supposedly spare spectrum. Duh, Craig.
If there is a financially viable use of the AM spectrum with a HD
radio service, why has this not happened in the nearly 2 decades
since HD radio was authorized.
Because when I go to Walmart, or when I buy any of most new cars, I don't find
HD Radio anywhere. Duh, Craig.
Sub channels are commercially successful in a few markets;
Subchannels are essentially all I watch, as OTA TV. Many people do. One perfect
example being BBC TV on our PBS station's .2 subchannel, or in my own case,
France 24. And if TV stations weren't in bed with MVPD operators, you'd see
even more attractive subchannels.
They want something that broadcast radio either does not, or cannot
provide.
Radio CAN provide more choice. With HD Radio, would could get a lot more
choice. (Or DRM, if we want to start all over. I have no reason to prefer the
Ibiquity scheme over DRM, now that DRM seems to have added a hybrid mode,
convenient for a transitional period.)
But most markets have multiple radio stations, each of which is
focused on its primary service, not sub channels.
That's silly. The station gains the more ears it can attract. Their channel is
like a mini MVPD. Every extra pair of ears matters to the station, no matter
what subchannel the listener is using.
So I looked at Best Buy to see what they are offering. You can get
table top HD radios, high end receivers that support home theater
and surround sound, portable radios, and dozens of car radios.
Sorry, Craig. First off, GO to Best Buy. GO to Target. GO to Walmart. Where are
all these HD Radios? Secondly, even using their web site, show me which of
these have HD Radio:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/home-audio-systems/receivers-amplifiers/pcmcat309300050002.c?id=pcmcat309300050002
And cars? Aftermarket radios are no way to get people to use the scheme.
Although slowly, manufacturers have started introducing HD Radio. One by one.
Very slow and laborious process.
As for Sangean, I suspect this is an issue of demand. You are,
however, wrong once again. Take a look at this $99 Sangean portable
HD radio on Amazon
I'm not talking about a cheap portable. Look at the Sangean Internet stereo
tuner. In the US, you only get old analog radio, plus Internet. In Europe, you
get that, plus DAB. Why, Craig? Don't come back with some stand-alone cheap
table radio or portable that might have HD Radio. How about in components
people actually buy?
Norway is shutting down FM radio and will only offer DAB.
But other countries are not. Besides, how do you think Norway shuts down analog
radio, Craig? Do you think it's by consumer demand? Think again. "Mandate,"
Craig.
The increased use of antennas today is mostly
Your opinion, Craig. The increased use of antennas was because of the value
proposition. Were it not for superb image quality of OTA TV, OTA TV would not
have seen any sort of resurrection at all. No one wants ghosty, grainy, washed
out analog TV these days, Craig.
BS. It took FM radio decades to take hold, Craig. FM started
broadcasting in the late 1940s, yet in the 1970s it was still far
from ubiquitous in radios.
BS. The main reason it took so long for FM to take hold was the
market strength of AM radio.
Craig' typical double-speak way of arguing. The Wiki quote only repeats what I
already told you, Craig. "Market strength of AM radio" is blather. The point
was, people and cars had AM radios way more than FM. It took decades to change
that equation. Without mandate, these things can take forever. It wasn't until
something like late 1970s that all car radios had FM. Finally. And after that,
AM went downhill super fast. So people do get it, but they have to be given
that option. EASY option.
