Bob, I wasn't asking for marketing hype, second hand impressions and
ignorant "right now a store (I don't know the type ...") assumptions. You
are out of your element.

And, if you think young people buying receivers for people who don't want
them is a measure of success ...

 From the Freeview site...
"FREEVIEW is available from a wide range of retailers - from national
electrical retailers to smaller independent electrical retailers, and
also in other well known high street retailers, department stores and
supermarkets."

From talking to people there I have heard of large displays or
quantities of receivers piled up in supermarkets. Right now a store (
don't know the type) called Comet is offering a receiver for 25 Pounds
if you buy 150 Pounds worth of other stuff.
Here is an URL
http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/172.html
From a post at Digital Spy Forums
"thought it would be a good idea for people who see offers on freeview
equipment to post them here , for example - Comet - Spend £150+ get a
(insert model) freeview box for £25 , offer ends (insert date)."

They list 14 manufacturers and say there are more here.

In the UK it is the young, well off or not, who have been buying
receivers. In many cases they buy one for their parents who would not
otherwise buy one. It is the old who have been most resistant to
Freeview. It was and is one of the few negatives about the service, how
to entice older viewers to make the switch when they are happy with what
they have. One consistant story is of the kids buying for the parents
and then teaching them how to use it.

On a recent visit to a Best Buy in New York they had to look for an OTA
receiver. They knew they had one. It was setting near a sales desk with
a pile of other things on it. No one knew much about it. It was the only
one they had thats for sure.
