I spent a few hours birding around Florence on Saturday Nov 30 with Vjera Thompson and Sean Burns. One highlight was in the pre-dawn gloom in w Eugene: a BLACK-crowned Night-Heron cruised along Royal Ave west of the intersection with Terry. There are several large D-fir scattered south of Royal in that area, maybe worth scanning at dawn from the checkermallow parking area or along Royal. There was a good swarm of seabirds off the s jetty at Flor. At least five RED phalaropes were around the end of the s jetty. Big flocks of Pacific and Common Loon (only one RT) and maybe 300 murres, plenty of rhinos and grebes, at least two SOOTY shear and maybe 35 generic dark shear, some of which showed dark underwings. Nice flock of forest birds including Townsend's at start of Baker Beach Rd. Some noisy V rails there. A Black Phoebe was along the ne edge of Lily Lake. The elk pastures there were pretty quiet at midafternoon, though coopers, sharpshin and redtail all cruised the hillside. Vjera and Sean can add as needed. Details to ebird. Back to Colorado later today. Tomorrow it will be 63 in Boulder and 27 in Eugene. ??? Back in Oregon most of the time after Dec. 23.
