This would work Linda but I'd prefer to do it in a field if possible so
the person who inherits this task doesn't have to bother.

I was thinking if I could do something that says IF (or Next IF or Skip
If), MERGEFIELD contains an @ symbol, exclude it. I've been
experimenting but can't quite get it.

Here's what I wrote which doesn't work: {IF {MERGEFIELD
"Communication"}<>"@" {MERGEFIELD "Communication"}""}

The reason this doesn't work is because none of my fields are just an @
symbol but may include the @ symbol. I realize I need a way to say "does
not contain" but can't figure out how. I found this in the help file
but don't understand

" If the operator is =3D or <>, Expression2 can contain a question mark
(?) to represent any single character, or an asterisk (*) to represent
any string of characters. The expression must be enclosed in quotation
marks so that it is compared as a character string. "

/g

Ok..here's how I did it in Word 2002/2003

Go into your Merge document....and go to Step 3 of the merge...in there,
click on Edit Recipient List and that will show you the Excel stuff with
the field names at the top...click on the dropdown for the Communication
field...and choose (Advanced...)

In there, click on the Field dropdown and choose Communication...then
click on the Comparison dropdown and choose Does Not Contain...then
type an @ into the next box that says Compare To..then click OK
