I'm well aware of restore disks, but you SHOULD get an original CD for
all the software you get...in case you have to F/Disk. You should be
able to start fresh.

Most restore discs have an option to refresh the install, which only
reinstalls (copies over) the original files without altering any new
programs or files. As a matter of fact I haven't seen a restore disc
without this option. Not to say there isn't one. You can put the
restore disc in and restart the computer and it should show available
install options. I was under the impression that the restore disc was
originally a MS requirement, so as not to have to burn as many OS discs,
but I could be wrong there too. (Ten cents times how many million?)
Thanks Don

Sorry to hear you have such a mess on your hands!

Allow me at this point to provide you with two important pieces of
advice:

1) Call Compaq and ask them why the hell they sold you a computer
WITHOUT an original copy of Windows 98...since you PAID FOR IT when you
bought the computer and DEMAND that they send you a backup copy of
Windows 98!

2) Tell your boys that if they touch that computer again and do ANYTHING
to it without your permission you'll break their fingers! <smirk>

Good luck!

Thanks Dian,.
late getting back to you.I couldn't do anything with a Windows 98 se as
I have to borrow one.Compaq never supplied one only a Quick Restore disc
which will wipe everything. We got a file from a web site and then tried
to register it as you said but it gave a message : load library
(msnp32.dll) failed. Get last Error returns 0X00000002 - which means
nothing to me. Anyway I went to work and upon return something drastic
has happened to the computer. The boys backed up and copied lots of stuff
in case we lost it all and there's a massive loss of space down to 70
MB.what they did I don't know, but it looks like we'll just have to
eradicate everything and start afresh with the Restore disc. Many thanks
to you folk for all your attempts to save us. When I saw your jargon
things I thought LOL was Lots Of Love.So I send you that anyway! Bob.
