Hubert, If you have a copy of Sparey's book, The Amateur's Lathe, look at Fig. 137 on Page 135 where a boring bar betwen centers is being used to face the end of a casting. I think you could use a modification of this proceedure to do the recesses for the bearing flanges on your lathe headstock.
