Oh sure, there are always ways around stuff. I will probably end up getting the new motif when it comes out so that I can use custom samples live without having to wait forever to load them.

If you need pres, they expect you to get an external box.

Actually, a box like the VoiceLive 2 would be a spectacular front-end to the Motif. You sing in to that, it cleans your vocals up, does auto-tune, does harmonies, etc, then feeds at line level in to the Motif. On the Motif, the mixing settings in performance or the sequencer modes can treat the input jacks like any other part. So, you can have that part set to how ever you'd like your vocals mixed for that song. You could send MIDI out from the Motif in to the VL2 in order to control the harmonies. The VL2 is already a stomp-box type design, so you can put it under your keyboard stand, and use your feet to trigger the modes. Almost makes me want to perform live.

The portamento isn't exactly broken. It just doesn't work the way that we want. It works perfectly for sampled instruments. If you're playing C3, then glide to C4, the Motif can't just speed up the sample on C3 to make it have C4 pitch (would sound way too pitch stretched). So, when you press a new key, before starting the glide, the Motif switches the sample to the sample of the new key. So, if you're playing C3, then glide to C4, the Motif first switches to the sample for C4, then glides up to it. This makes real instrument glides sound great! For analog-type stuff, though, since the sample always changes when you start a new glide, there is a click. We talked about a setting that could be used to turn this sample-switching behavior off for an element or entire voice. That would require adding a new parameter to a voice's settings, though, and that would break the current voice format. That's why they say that it will need to wait until the engine is changed, and they'll be breaking the format, anyway.

You can record multiple tracks of audio. You do that with sampling, using the sample+note mode. When you do that, the Motif samples, and, when you're finished, it inserts the note event to trigger that sample at the right moment. This isn't exactly hard disk recording, but you can record to several tracks (which will be using sampling voices), and each sampling voice can store up to 256 takes. You can even stack takes on a single key. You can record background vocals on C3, and keep overdubbing on to that key as much as you want, until you run out of takes.

Yeah, while the addition of flash memory is a nice touch, I was hoping there would be some additional features, such as decent mic pres with xlr inputs and phantom power, the ability to record multiple audio tracks to disk, and of course a fix for the problem with portamento on mono instruments. We'll just have to see if it's worth upgrading. It doesn't seem as though the hardware is changing much.

The motif xf is really adding some new sounds based on new wave rom
which just expands on the xs current wave rom, and offers a flash
memory option to permanently load samples. Some fixes for the xf are
coming to the xs in an os update. That's really about it.

Hello,

Just curious: has there been any talk at all of a new motif being
released next year? I figured it's been about 4 years since the xs,
so maybe yamaha is planning something?
