If you use dictate rather than asking Siri to post the message, you can write 
the text as long as you wish. Just remember, every 140 characters becomes a new 
text message. So, the person receiving the message receives multiple messages. 
Also, the total number of messages is subtracted from the block of messages you 
purchase, or you are charged $0.20 per 140 character block.

My guess is people have been complaining to Apple about receiving substantial 
text message charges when having Siri write the messages.
