It must be the week for appliance hell -- my a/c quit (and it's 95), my tub
won't drain and my shower decided to leak interminably

Our a/c people are so overworked they're giving out waiting numbers....

I'm so glad I'm not the only one up at 4 in the morning on Sunday (doing

And why, btw, is the internet the prime place for insomniacs? What did they
do before?

Your piece is gorgeous. It reminds me a little of Dillard and a little of
Sexton ...Rowing Toward God

As soon as I had sent the thing--btw "thundering" should have been
"thundered"--I went to bed, about two our time. We had returned home from a
party and
I thought a moment or two fiddling with the piece, a touch here or there,
would suffice. You know how that goes. After about an hour, the computer
swallowed my work. So then I began again.

I am rarely up at that time.

Thanks for your good wishes, especially cherished since I've risen to find
the water heater burst and our plans for an anniversary hike much revised.
Fortunately "Stan the Hot Water Man" works on Sundays.
