Actually, the "show 'em who's boss" method is timelessly valid and universal. It is not violent or cruel. Perhaps the outmoded techniques you are referring to involve some sort of cruelty or violence to show the dog "who's the boss." I don't know. As opposed to cats, dogs DO want and need to know where they fit in the social hierarchy. They are pack animals and their status in the pack determines their behavior.

Again, establishing dominance is not violent or cruel. In fact, if your dog associates your presence with violence or cruelty, you won't be able to teach it anything. Dogs approach their masters expecting social, not punitive, behavior.
