Andreas: By the way, it's no longer called "dog obedience
school".
What is it now? Multispecies Sensitivity Training?
Actually, the "show 'em who's boss" method is timelessly
valid and universal. It is not violent or cruel. Perhaps the
outmoded techniques you are referring to involve some sort
of cruelty or violence to show the dog "who's the boss." I
don't know. As opposed to cats, dogs DO want and need to
know where they fit in the social hierarchy. They are pack
animals and their status in the pack determines their behavior.
Again, establishing dominance is not violent or cruel. In
fact, if your dog associates your presence with violence or
cruelty, you won't be able to teach it anything. Dogs
approach their masters expecting social, not punitive, behavior.
