the conversion does not involve adding any data to the events. the
issue is converting from a protocol that is very loose in semantic
terms to one that the host can understand/use in a predictable way.

a GMPI event that maps a MIDI event will likely contain no more data
than the corresponding MIDI message, other than a timestamp and the
extra bytes implied by using floats rather than nybbles.
