Frankly, this is an enormous pain in the butt. Question for musical instrument manufacturers: did you gain most money from the relatively open MIDI protocol and consequent sheer explosion of equipment sales, or from more proprietary SYSEX/HID implementations with "lock in" and "partnerships"? I think it's a case of gaining a great deal from the sheer opening and expansion of a new market, versus gaining a little bit by fighting over a new corner of it. GMPI done properly could lead to a new phase of explosive growth in music gear by finally bringing fiddlers, jazzers, and who knows what into the networked studio. Do you want me to send you the responses I get from companies that make these devices when I ask them for specs so that we can do an open-source implementation of their protocol? Even for Mackie, they were pretty pissed when it turned out that Emagic had inadvertently leaked the entire sysex control protocol for the {Mackie,Logic}Control on their website. Interoperation of DAWs and control surfaces is part of the old "host differentiation" that we've heard about. Apparently no reason to favor interoperability in this market when you can use protocols to forge strategic relationships ... --p ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Generalized Music Plugin Interface (GMPI) public discussion list Participation in this list is contingent upon your abiding by the following rules: Please stay on topic.
